Nightlife in Pantai Tengah, Langkawi

Although Pantai Tengah is not as thickly populated with bars & pubs the way Pantai Cenang is, it is another active hub of nightlife in Langkawi. In fact many locals who are die hard fans of the night scene in Tengah would vehemently argue that Tengah is much better than Cenang when it comes to nightlife. If you ask me, having experienced the two places over the years, I would have a hard time to rank one over the other.

Pantai Tengah certainly has some of the most popular music & sports bars in the island. There are also bars that play the old hits of 70s and at the same time ones that play the live hard rocks where folks dance away to the wee hours.

And after all, if you are staying in Pantai Tengah, then many Pantai Cenang bars are also within stone's throw distance. So if one of your main considerations is nightlife, then Pantai Tengah can certainly get short listed as a place to stay. But as like rest of the island, do not expect discotheques here. There are virtually none in the island. Despite that, there are enough opportunities for you spend a great evening, be it live music of your choice, dance, watching sports channel on LCD screens, playing a game of pool or chatting with fellow tourists.

Below are some of the top nightlife options in Pantai Tengah arranged by budget category.

One Love Reggae Bar

(Budget, Bar Music & Dance)
This is located behind the Cactus Restaurant & Bar and opposite to Holiday Villa Resort. Opened in 2012. This is more like a shack in a jungle where music and dance sessions take place over drinks. It serves only drinks and no food. The dance session usually starts from mid-night and continues till late hours.

Although it has a Spartan look, it's quite popular with both young and mid-aged locals and tourists. The music for dance sessions comprise of mainly Hiphop & R&B, 80's & 90's Pop hits, Reggae & Reggaeton etc. Seating arrangement is mostly on cushions laid on floors. It's open daily from 6pm till 3am. Only cash is accepted.
Location: Pantai Tengah, Opposite Holiday Villa.

(Mid-Range, Bar)
You will always find music playing in the background of this nice cozy bar. It's located on a side road and next to the Green Village Resort (it's actually part of the hotel property and set up with lots of greenery around). On Mondays, there is a live musical performance by a local group. The bar is patronized heavily by the locals, merchants and returning tourists. The drinks are cheap and the atmosphere is perfectly congenial to make new friends. It's open till late hours.

(Mid-Range, Sports Bar)
This is probably the last bar to close every night in the island. Offers great friendly ambience, large screen LCD display of sports channels and patronized by many locals. Beer, drinks and snacks are very reasonably priced. Also has a pool table.

El Toro Espanol Tapas Bar & Cafe

(Mid-Range, Bar & Restaurant)
Setup in a nice garden setting, this place is excellent for Spanish cuisine and even several Spanish wine. Some of their signature dishes include the Spanish Tapas, Paella and Sangria. The red and white Sangria has already created a name for itself in the island. They also have LCD TV running sports channels and free wi-fi service. With nice garden setting and Latin music in he background, you can have a cool evening at the bar. The service is friendly.

(Upscale, Bar & Live Retro Music)
A local's favorite, Sunba is located at the Sun Mall complex and has a Kumpung (village) house setting inside with all wooden furniture giving it a rustic look in dim lights. The live band plays retro hits from the 60s to 80s while the guests get into their dance moves and some even try out a game of pool. A great upscale bar for a cool evening with dance and retro music.

(Upscale, Bar)
This popular bar is located inside the Awana Porto Malai Resort (now known as Resorts World Langkawi) at the south western tip. Favorite to the local youngsters as well as to visiting tourists, DJs and live bands play hard rocks till late hours. Yes the music is loud and therefore more youngsters here. The food is essentially pub fare. This is an upscale bar and drinks are not cheap by any means.

(Mid-Range, Restaurant & Beach Bar)
The best thing about this place is its location and the alfresco ambience, and also the seating provisions right on the beach. You would enjoy a drink, the fascinating sunset and alfresco dinner at the ground floor or sitting by a beachside table under the open sky and next to swaying palms. This is where an old lighthouse used to be, the structure of which is still retained. The food is definitely pricey. They serve Malay and International cuisine, and offer a number of day's specials. If you don't mind spending a bit more than what the food & drinks should ideally cost then this is a great place to spend an evening, enjoy the sunset and the view of the ocean. One good thing is they have a long extended happy hours when the drinks (cocktails and beer) are offered at very reasonable prices.

Sunday Bistro & Restaurant

(Upscale, Restaurant & Bar)
This is an upscale bistro with an elegant ambience with sofa seating. As you walk in, you will get a feel that you may need to empty your pocket to enjoy an evening here. Fortunately that's not the case. Even being an upscale restaurant & bar, the prices are reasonable. You can have dinner and couple of beer for about RM80 between two persons. They specialize in Chinese and Western cuisine. Some of the great preparations includes Hawaiian Prawn, Indonesian style cooked duck, etc. They serve brunch, lunch & dinner.

They also have a section on home decor and gifts. So before or after you dine, go around the 14,000 square feet display space to see some exclusive home furnishing and gift items. They also offer shipment service to foreign countries. There are over 3,000 items on display that are mostly handcrafted. These items are mainly sourced from neighboring countries like Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam etc. Sunday Bistro has a branch in Kuah at Langkawi Fair Mall.
