Great Homestays in Langkawi

So why are you looking for a homestay? Why not a hotel? Well some visitors explore homestays for lower cost and higher value for money. If that is your only consideration then I must say that several nice budget hotels can easily qualify as a better choice while offering additional amenities and services compared to a homestay.
But many look for homestays to find a home away from home. Well if you are a foreigner, an added attraction would be to live in a Malay home out of home. If you are with your family and children, or just two of you like to spend a few days privately while enjoying the hospitality of Malay hosts in their homestay property and get a feel of the local culture of the islanders as well as village life, then home stays in Langkawi could be ideal choices.
In Langkawi home stays come in different flavors. While there are ábudget units, there are also luxury kampung (village) style stays available. However budget and luxury are only to do with your affordability.
But when it comes to offerings, most homestays in Langkawi are independent houses, small bungalows or units where you live for few days in absolute privacy. The owners or the hosts would hand-over the key to you and you are on your own. Usually a proper homestay would prefer that you stay for minimum few nights rather than just an overnight stay and treat it like a hotel.
The homestays are mostly furnished accommodations and have all basic amenities including air conditioning (at least in some rooms unless it's a low end homestay), shower with geysers, fridge, kitchenette with utensils and cutlery, some come with washing machines, ironing facility, some even offering wi-fi etc.
Most would have at least two bedrooms or even three with couple of shared bathrooms. The living room would have a TV running a few cable channels and there will be a free car park. Note that air-con is a necessity in warm and humid climate of Langkawi. Daily cleaning service is provided. Hosts would also arrange for a rental car if you so want.
You will need to get all your groceries from nearby stores and cook yourself. So you are living in the island while enjoying the atmosphere and style of a true Malay home.
At some home stays the owners live in the same compound but in a separate house. In such cases you can get regular attention from the owners and ask for any specific help. If you are not the type who would like to cook, then your choice is to either eat out or find a homestay that would at least serve you breakfast and dinner.
Fortunately in Langkawi such choices are also available where you get to eat fresh homemade food served by the hosts. But such options are limited as most homestays provide all amenities for you to cook yourself.
So if your plan is to cook, you must ensure that location of your homestay is convenient and there are grocery and other convenience stores nearby. You should be able to walk down or drive down easily to get your provisions. Some homestays in the island could be very remote and are not recommended at all for foreigners.

Review of Home Stays

Below are some homestays in Langkawi that are great in their own ways:

Fox Hill Village &áHomestay

(Mid-Range Category, in outer Padang Matsirat and near Kuah)
If you are looking for an upscale homestay with full service and modern amenities in a lush garden setting with several houses in the property offering you a range of choices for your stay depending on size and liking of your family, then this can be an ideal choice. Houses with individual names are designed like local village houses with Malay architecture and surrounded by vast paddy fields, forested area and nature to you give you all the tranquility and comfort you want. And it's all backed by very high quality service with broad smiles, friendliness and lots of love.

Nany House Homestay

(Budget Category, in outer Padang Matsirat and near Kuah)
An impressive bungalow style house with three bedrooms (two air conditioned), two bathrooms, a large living room with LCD TV with Astro channels, garden setting, open patio in front with enough car park and all other basic amenities. This is an independant private stay where you will need to get your provisions and cook. The host doesn't stay in the premises. The home stay is about 10 minutes from airport and about 12 minutes from Kuah town.

Malinja Homestay

(Budget Category, in outer Padang Matsirat and near Kuah)
Two independent units where two families can stay separately, each unit has three bedrooms, two baths, living/ dining space, car parking and all basic amenities. Like the earlier homestay, this too is quite conveniently located and is only about 18 minutes drive from Kuah and 15 minutes from airport. The owner's family stays in a separate house few yards away at the back side but in the same compound. So you can get all the help that you may need.

Shirin Guesthouse

(Budget Category, located at Pantai Cenang)
This is a nice budget homestay run by a senior couple. The chalets of different sizes are spread in a lovely garden setting with lots of flowering plantations around. The location is quiet and calm, although very convenient. The Cenang beach and the main road full of eateries &áshops are only one minute walk from the guesthouse. This is lodging only accommodation, but has a common area where beverages are served.
