Ten Street Motel, Langkawi

Category: Budget,  Location: Kuah

This is a tiny hotel in Kuah with only 5 rooms. All rooms are upstairs in a two-storey building. The entrance is through a narrow stairway with a grilled iron gate located next to a camera store. The entrance signage and the hotel is not quite prominently visible, so watch carefully as you look for the hotel and likely you will otherwise miss it.

It's located on the same row as the public bank but a few blocks away. The hotel basically offers only rooms with virtually no other service or food.

The hotel is however very centrally located and surrounded by stores of all types. In fact the night market of Kuah sets up on the street on which the hotel is located and you can see the stalls through your room's window. So if Night Market (also known as flee market) is one of the attractions you are looking forward to in Langkawi, then there is probably no better location than this one. However note that the night market in Kuah sets up only on Wednesday and Saturday evenings.

There is only one staff - a lady at the small reception who is available usually during the regular hours, although the reception remains open till 10pm. When the lady is not there, the owner himself is usually present. However after 10pm you are unlikely to find anybody there. So before checking in or checking out, it's better that you give a call to the owner on his hand phone so that he can pre-arrange the logistics.

Rooms & Amenities

There are only 5 rooms including one family room. Two are standard rooms with twin beds and the other two are standard rooms with two queen beds each. So within the standard rooms, there are larger ones and the owner would be usually glad to upgrade you to the larger room if available during your stay.

Rooms are quite clean although they look a bit old. They have amenities that are better compared to the ones in its category. The hotel offers a large bottle of packaged drinking water in the room and coffee/tea sachets. There is a water heater and you can make your own coffee.

Rooms have air conditioners although there is no remote control. The temperature controller is attached to the air-con and hanging on the wall on a wire. So if you need to adjust the temperature, you will need to every time reach out to the air-con.

Rooms also have a small side desk. Beds have small as well large pillows. The flat screen TV runs select cable channels. Free in-room wi-fi is available as well. The attached bathrooms have geysers. If there is one thing missing that would be a mini fridge in the room so that you could store some food and drinks.

While there is usually no issue with car park, on the evenings when night market sets up, the road is closed and you will need to park your car on the next lane. Although the hotel serves no food, you can easily reach out to eateries which are close by. There is a food court near the Am Bank. You will get noodles, curry etc over there.

What we like about the hotel

1) The location is excellent and quite central. There are ample shops and eateries within easy walking distance. The location is good if your main purpose is to stay in the town for shopping or business etc. Plenty of duty free shopping stores like Zeno duty free shopping center, Coco Valley Duty Free etc are within easy walking distance.
2) The rooms are fairly clean and amenities are nice for its category.
3) Good showers in the attached bathrooms and water pressure is good.
4) Free in-room wi-fi is an added bonus.
5) The owner is very friendly and will provide you all the information you may need.
6) Overall it's a great value for money considering location, amenities and price.

Some Cons

1) Bathrooms are really small and the wash basins are so small that you can hardly wash your water bottles.
2) There is virtually no service other than a lady staff at the reception during the regular hours. At nights, the owner also leaves and there is nobody in the hotel.
3) The front gate is often left open and that may pose safety issues.
4) Rooms are all upstairs and requires climbing the stairs from the road level. So if you have disability problems, then it may not be suitable.
