Nightlife in Pantai Cenang, Langkawi

If there is one happening place in the whole of Langkawi, then it must be Pantai Cenang. There is no other place in the island which has so many bars and pubs lined up in a row along the road that passes by the beach. Having said that, do not expect brain shaking loud rocks and discotheques where you can dance away to the wee hours. In fact you won't get that anywhere in the island.

However if you plan to spend a cool evening with beer or drinks, have chats with fellow tourists & locals, listen to some good music (background or live), or watch some sports channel on wide LCD screen while having a drink, or alternatively like to have a cocktail watching a spectacular sunset from a beachside table, there are enough options for that. There are many bars and lounges that stay live & kicking till late hours everyday. And below are some of our top favorites.

(Mid-Range, Beach Bar, Seafood/barbecue)
If you are looking for a budget beach bar in a natural & friendly ambience then this is the place to go. The entire 1-acre beachfront area has been set up using driftwood and other natural materials. So the setting is like a rustic village by the beach. Take your own mat, sit on it with your feet on the sand and ocean just yards away, have a beer and get immersed into live music ... that's what Babylon is all about. It offers nice lunch & dinner as well.

(Mid-Range, Beach Bar, snacks/seafood/barbecue)
As you walk down the narrow pathway by the side of the restaurant Tomato Nasi Kandar in Pantai Cenang, you will reach this beach cafe. To sum it up, its all about live music, barbecue and drinks on the beach. One of the highlights here is watching the wonderful sunset while having your dinner. And after that, settle down by the side of a candlelit table on the sand, have a drink and get absorbed with the music. They stay open until late hours, but you won't get proper food once the kitchen closes at 10:30pm.

(Mid-Range, Irish Pub & Bar, Malay/International Food)
Located at the southern end of Pantai Cenang and close to Underwater World, this is a great place to have a friendly chat with the owners Debbie and Greg while enjoying a drink and background music. Nice ambience and the food menu is also interesting offering snacks, burgers, fish n' chips as well as main courses like beef rendang, Irish Stew, seafood and prawn preparations. The drinks and cocktails are also reasonably priced. You get Guinness stout here. They are open till late.

(Mid-Range, Bar & Restaurant, Indian/Western)
Located right at the Pantai Cenang Beach, Oasis has an indoor bar & dining area, and also a beautiful outdoor area on the sand that stretches right up to the beach. The outdoor area offers great view of the water and the sunset. Having a cocktail or a beer and watching the sun going down from here can be an experience to remember.

But the service unfortunately is not always up to the mark. Some staffs are too young and can be non-caring at times. Indian and western fares are quite okay. You will get drinks here till late hours as you watch the waves crashing a few feet away. A background music plays. Overall a great ambience.

(Upscale, Beach Bar, International/Asian Cuisine)
This open bar with a canopy roof cover is setup on the sand and by the beach side of Pantai Cenang. It's part of the Beach Garden Resort. You will have your feet on the sand. With palms & coconut trees swaying, wonderful view of the ocean and sunset, the ambience is perfectly romantic. They specialize in beer and import German beer as well.

You also get a range of spirits and wine selections here. The Swiss Chef prepares nice seafood that has a blend of both Asian and International touch. This is a great place to have a drink with your partner, or have a quiet chat with your friend over a beer or cocktail.

Chin Chin Bar & Lounge

(Upscale, Bar & Lounge)
This is located inside the Bon Ton Resort amidst lush greenery. When you look at the lounge from outside you will feel as if you are entering an old Asian wooden house. And inside it's full of antiques and old wood furniture to give it a look of a traditional Chinese house. However with its funky Asian style, it is actually an upscale bar & lounge and patronized by many locals. It serves Cocktails, Liqueurs, Wines etc. A standard cocktail or Martini would cost around RM22, A Single Malt Whiskey would be around RM26. One of the recommended drinks here is liqueur flavored coffees. There are also non alcoholic beverages like coffee, cappuccino, expresso, mattchiato, tea, hot chocolate etc.

(Upscale, Bar & Restaurant)
The Sunset Deck is also located inside the Bon Ton Resort. It's a Wonderful open air seating area on an wooden platform surrounded by palms and coconut trees and offering lovely view of sunset. It offers Tapas/Mezze Menu, Cocktails, Wine & Liqueurs and other non alcoholic beverages. The alcohol and cocktail prices are similar to that of Chin Chin Bar & Lounge.

Palo Palo

(Budget, Beach Bar)
This is a hut like structure right on the beach having thatched roof made of nipa leaves. As you approach the place, you know you are getting into an extra casual & no-frill beach bar. They serve only chilled beer here but welcome you to carry your own drinks. There is no food. If you request Captain Ali, he will make special arrangement for barbecue if you so wish and even massage like foot reflexology on the beach.

It's a very popular place with both locals and tourists on low budget... a great place to meet and make new friends. You will see small national flags and post cards left behind by the guests indicating how much they like the place. It also has many small handicraft items and other knick knacks on display creating a nice cozy ambience.
