Melati Tanjung Motel Langkawi

Category: Budget,  Location: Pantai Cenang

Located centrally in Pantai Cenang with the famous beach right behind the building, Melati Tanjung is a great budget hotel if you want to be right on the beach and also in the middle of all actions like water sports, beach activities, great restaurants, bars and shops.

I had observed that this hotel is a great favorite of the locals. During public holidays and even on Sundays, many local families book the sea view rooms and spend a couple of days here relaxing. But it' gradually getting quite popular with the tourists as well. And that is reflected in the recent expansion of the hotel adding new floors and several rooms. The entrance to the reception is from the main road of Cenang. The small reception area has a fish aquarium, cushioned seats, some books & new papers to read. As you walk in and start interacting with the front desk staff (usually a lady during the day time), you will realize that you are in good hands. In fact all staffs in the hotel are friendly and helpful.

Rooms & Amenities

One of the best gifts of this hotel is it's location - Pantai Cenang Beach. This is the beach which attracts most tourists in the island for its beauty and range of activities.

There are sea facing rooms and ones facing the road. The sea view rooms are the first to get filled up and they have nice balconies overlooking the water and several tiny forested islands offshore. If you like to go for a sea view room, then there are two great options.

Either go for the ones at the 4th (top) floor of block-B which are new rooms offering fantastic views of the ocean. The sunset view from the balcony is amazing. In fact our favorite is Room no. B-408 which is at the left corner of 4th floor and facing the water.

Another great sea view room option is to take one at the ground floor that faces the water. The lovely cute verandas are raised from the ground with short flight of stairs. It's a great feeling when you relax at the balcony and enjoying the views of para sailing, jet skiing and children swimming right in front of you. But one downside with these rooms is the privacy.

There will be people walking along the beach and close to your room. In fact the passage between the two buildings of the hotel is used as a public thoroughfare to access the beach. So if you are sitting on the balcony of the ground floor, you will bound to come eye to eye with most people passing by.

The budget rooms do not have sea view and are mostly towards the main road. But it really doesn't matter, the beach is after all right behind the building. Most rooms have queen beds. The family rooms which have sea views from balcony come with two queen beds. The hotel has some budget rooms in a building across the main road as well (with no sea view).

All rooms (particularly the newly built and renovated ones) are clean and quite spacious. They all have basic amenities like air conditioning, mini fridge, Television (although only three local channels are available and none are in English), attached clean bath with hot shower (good water pressure) etc. They provide towels in the bathrooms but no toiletries. If you want wi-fi, go down to the lobby area at the ground floor.

They also have home stay option. It has living room, bedroom, bathroom with hot shower, kitchen, fridge, washing machine, TV with local channels etc.

Right next door on the beach (towards right as you face the water) is Babylon Beach Bar - a very popular reggae bar which plays reggae music until late night. It's a great affordable place to have beer and drinks after dark. But the little downside is the noise at night. It stays open from 4pm until 2pm and the loud music can be clearly heard from most rooms facing the beach. If you want quieter rooms, then take one in the left block away from the beach bar or one facing the road. We don't mind the free music though :)

As you come out of the hotel, you will get numerous restaurants and shops on both sides of the road. So eating and shopping are two other reasons why you should choose this hotel. The front desk staff are very helpful and will organize island and boating tours at reasonable price. Limited parking is available in front of the hotel and on the road.

What we like about the hotel

  • The first thing about this hotel is its location - right on the main part of Pantai Cenang beach with rooms having perfect view of the sea. There are numerous restaurants, bars and shops just outside on the road.
  • This is a family run hotel. The staffs are very friendly. The housekeeping staff clean the rooms almost daily or whenever you want them to.
  • Nice clean and spacious rooms and bathrooms.
  •

    What can improve

  • There is no elevator in the hotel. So if you take a room in the 4th floor, carrying your heavy luggage can be quite cumbersome.
  • Noise from the adjacent beach bar can be irritating for some at night. They play loud music until about 2am.
  • Although rooms have wall mounted new LCD TVs, there are very limited Channels and that too all in Malay... not of any use to foreign tourists. This I think is the weakest point in the hotel which the management should look into.

    How to book this hotel

You should call up the hotel for booking & room inquiry. They don't seem to be very efficient with emails. They require advance deposit (through bank transfer) to confirm room booking. However in my case, they booked a room without the deposit since I was not having CIMB bank account or a local banking facility.
