Old Langkawi Charm
Traditional Food Tour

About The Tour

This is a great way to spend a wonderful evening in the laps of abundant greenery and traditions galore especially if you are looking for something that is less touristy and off the beaten track. It is both an informative and a fun tour which veritably takes you back to the old days in Malaysia.

The tour encompasses spending an evening in a very beautifully restored and classic old wooden Kampung house (traditional village house some of which are as old as 86 years) where you get to help in the cooking of some traditional Malay food which is partaken by everyone once it is made.

You are driven to the heart of the island through quaint villages and rice fields that lead to the lovely locale where you get a very warm greeting and homemade welcome drinks by the host. Along the way you will pass by paddy fields and be able to see eaglets and water buffaloes.

Once you reach, you commence the evening with a short stroll through the paddy fields while imbibing the beautiful scenery around, soaking in the nature and also picking up interesting facts about the flora and fauna here. An interesting fact we learnt here was about the 'gunshots'… firecrackers that were used to scare away the monkeys. Also, we saw a couple of interesting nocturnal wildlife like the flying lemur and a snake (which we were told was not the poisonous kind!).

Coming to the cooking part of the tour, it is quite a unique experience where all the tour participants put in their share of help with the chopping, stirring, frying and other aspects involved in the cooking process. However, this does not mean you will be under any sort of pressure if you do not want to do anything. It is completely optional. It is not like a culinary lesson of any sort. In fact, much of the preparation is done in advance with just enough left for the tour group to chop and stir into the dishes.

However, having said that, it is a singular experience to participate especially when you don the red chef's apron and get into the groove of things. It gave us quite a unique feel and we helped make local delicacies like noodles, chicken curry, a tofu dish with traditional salad and pancakes. Each of them were spectacular dishes and very tasty creations in their own right. There are also friendly staff at hand to guide you. They are very passionate about their work and it is quite evident in their hospitality.

Food is prepared aplenty and once done, it is sufficient for everyone in the group. You have the option of buying beer or soft drinks to go  with your meal. They also serve the classic Malay cakes to finish off a hearty meal.

The food is served on the veranda amidst tranquil nature and lush greenery. It makes for a greatly enjoyable experience to sit around eating the food you have prepared and talking food with people who are not only passionate about food but about the environment as well. It almost feels like an evening spent at a friend's house, and finally leaving with your stomach and heart full.
