Temurun waterfall Langkawi

Located in Datai Bay area, Temurun is a three tier Waterfall and the cumulative drop of the falls is about 200 meters. This is the tallest waterfall in Langkawi. The water stream flows down the northern slope of  Mount Mat Cincang. The rocks here comprises mainly of sandstone & shale, and is over 500 million years old.

From the car park at the main road, the first tier is only a short distance away (about 5 minutes walk). The paved walk way is quite romantic and through the rain forest of Mount Mat Cincang. It's a gradual way up although some steps are steeper than the others. There is a railing on one side in most parts of the path way. Along the way there are several gazebos to take rest and soak in the nature all around.

One thing you will surely find are the macaque monkeys in plenty, all along up to the upper tier of the falls. But don't feed them. They are wild and can get aggressive if you try to feed them (because they may expect more) or disturb them. Otherwise they are usually harmless.

You will also find many butterflies, birds and small animals like squirrels along the way. Often the locals come to this place for picnics. The gazebos with seating arrangements are ideal for that. That is when you may find the place getting dirty with plastic bottles, packets and wastes thrown all around. This happens more because of the monkeys joining the party.

Once you reach the uppermost tier, that is where you get your true reward. You can see the waterfall coming down the steep rocky slope of the mountain and forming a beautiful natural pool at the base with clean and clear water. The pool is shallow but deep enough for a bath or a swim.

I have seen local boys even jumping from the adjoining cliff into the pool. You can also stand right below the water stream and feel the water splashing on your body.

With the rocky cliffs surrounding the pool, it's overall a magnificent setting. The drop in the top tier would be about 30 meters. However there is no marked trail to go further up to the top of the waterfall from the pool at the uppermost tier.

One thing to remember... this is a seasonal fall. You will actually enjoy the true gush of the water during the rainy season (September - October). During the other months, if there is a run of continuous dry days, then it's better to avoid it if you are expecting the stream in full flow. However on most days you will still see a thin water stream flowing down.

Entry & Timings
Entry is free and you can visit Temurun Waterfall anytime during the day time.

Facilities
There are hardly any facilities here other than few gazebos at various points including at the top. There is a car park below. Just opposite to the car park and on the other side of the road, there is a small open air restaurant 3-Tiga serving great Malay food at cheap prices. But it usually runs only during the high season and remains closed most other time. The Pebble Beach is located on the other side of the road.

Location & How to Reach
Temurun Waterfall is located in Datai Area in north western end of the island and on the road Jalan Datai. It would be about halfway between the Crocodile Adventureland and The Datai Resort and located about 42kms from Kuah Town. You will need to hire a taxi or take a rental car to come here. Pay waiting charge and keep the taxi waiting, otherwise you won't get one from here.
